Fishing for Good Nutrition

"I'm eating better"

Program/Sponsor: SeaShare, Inc., a member of Feeding America.

Location: Bainbridge Island, Washington

Working to improve lives: Seashare captures surplus seafood and turns it into products that are distributed to under-nourished families. SeaShare distributed more than 115 million seafood meals through the nation's food banks since 1994.

How Kraft helps make a difference: Since 2000, Kraft has issued more than $2.2 million in seafood grants to SeaShare and food banks across the country.

Real-life results: Most seafood contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins, which make it a valued source of protein. With Kraft's support, SeaShare is able to offer seafood-based products developed specifically for food banks, such as salmon patties and catfish nuggets. Kraft donated funds for equipment to reclaim usable meat from fish, making it possible to produce more than 10 million salmon patties since the fall of 2004, shipped by the truckload to food banks across the country.

Complications from diabetes cost Jack Wyatt his construction job. Earning a small income from cleaning offices leaves him with only about $40 a month for food. It's a challenge to maintain the strict diet that keeps Jack healthy. The affordable salmon SeaShare delivers to his community food pantry is a life-saver-literally.

"I run out of energy really quick if I don't get my proteins and my carbs just right. Eating that salmon actually made me start to feel better."
